MDEP Highlights
April 10, 2009
This week's MDEP Highlight demonstrates that significant fuel savings are
possible even with engines that have low DPM to begin with. The Fleet Analysis above shows a
location with two dozers. Each dozer
was adjusted to take it from a relatively low DPM to an extremely low DPM. In the case of equipment number 05103
the original DPM was recorded at 15.6%.
The human eye can just begin to see black smoke at 10% to 15% DPM. This dozer was producing almost no
visible smoke before any work was completed.
After working on this engine the DPM was lowered to 3.1% DPM producing a
fuel savings of 1,422 gallons. As
you can see from this example significant fuel savings is possible with even
those engines that do not appear to have any fuel loss as seen from the black
smoke exiting the tailpipe.
